3rd Annual Pig Roast was a HUGE SUCCESS!

We are thrilled to announce that the 3rd Annual Pig Roast was a resounding success! Held on Saturday, November 9th, 2024, the event raised an incredible $48,000, surpassing our expectations and bringing us closer to fulfilling our mission.

A special thanks to the American Legion Post 10 in Wausau, WI, whose generous donation of $25,000 provided a significant boost, and the Blue Knights, who contributed $5,000 to support our cause.

The star of the evening was undoubtedly Pit Master Dusty Warner, who delivered an unforgettable feast with his expert pig roasting skills. Guests enjoyed fantastic live entertainment from 2 Miles South, who graciously stepped in at the last minute and kept the crowd energized all night long.

This year, we sold 280 meals, an increase of 73 meals over last year’s total, demonstrating the growing support from our community. Our 28 incredible volunteers worked tirelessly to sell tickets, engage with attendees, and spread awareness of our mission, ensuring the event’s success.

We extend our heartfelt THANK YOU to:

  • Cabaret Cove for generously donating the space
  • Dusty Warner for his masterful pig roasting
  • 2 Miles South for keeping the music alive
  • American Legion Post 10, Blue Knights, and all our sponsors for their invaluable support
  • Our amazing volunteers and the wonderful community who came out to make this event unforgettable

Packers Give Back Event

Carla and Sandy had the honor of representing us at the Packers Give Back Event in Green Bay, WI. Not only did they enjoy a delicious lunch, live entertainment, and meet the incredible Eddie Garcia, but they also connected with one of the foundation’s trustees.

The highlight of the day? Receiving a generous $3,000 check from the Packers Give Back Foundation to help support our mission of serving local veterans, community outreach, and education in Wausau and Ashland.

We’re so grateful for this amazing opportunity and the support from the Packers organization. This gift will help us continue to make a difference for our veterans.

In Memory of Peter Carlson

Peter J. Carlson joined the board of Northwoods Veterans Homestead in 2022. Born in 1950, he was a Vietnam-era U.S. Navy veteran, serving from 1970 to 1974 as an Aviation Electronics technician at NAS Quonset Point, RI. After returning to Wisconsin, Peter worked as a stained glass artisan before launching a successful career in residential construction and commercial design. He later served as a CAD specialist and IBC compliance inspector for a Wisconsin architectural firm, continuing part-time after retiring in 2012.

Peter and his wife, Kathryn, generously donated thousands of dollars to Northwoods Veterans Homestead. While building their retirement home in Hurley, WI, Peter remained dedicated, attending monthly board meetings in Rhinelander. His construction expertise and commitment will be irreplaceable. He passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on November 19, 2024.
