VA Caregiver Program: Supporting Our Veterans

Who Are VA Caregivers?

VA caregivers are dedicated individuals providing vital support to service-disabled veterans or members of the Armed Forces undergoing medical discharge. These caregivers, while often family members, can also be individuals outside the immediate family circle.

Expanded Eligibility Criteria

As of October 1, 2022, the VA Caregiver Program has expanded its eligibility criteria. It now includes caregivers of eligible veterans from all eras, broadening its reach to encompass a wider range of service members.

Qualifying for Caregiver Benefits

Eligible veterans must have a single or combined service-connected disability rating of 70% or more. Those with a 60% disability rating receiving Individual Unemployability are ineligible. Veterans must require in-person care for at least six continuous months due to an inability to perform daily activities or a need for supervision, protection, or instruction due to functional impairment.

Becoming a Caregiver

To become a caregiver for a veteran, one must:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Reside with the veteran full-time or be prepared to do so if designated as their caregiver.
  • Undergo assessment by the VA for caregiver education and training capability.
  • Complete caregiver training to demonstrate proficiency in providing personal care services, core competencies, and additional care requirements.

Benefits for Approved Caregivers

Approved caregivers receive a range of benefits, including:

  • Education and training opportunities.
  • Access to health insurance if uninsured.
  • Mental health counseling support.
  • Financial stipends.
  • Respite care services.
  • Wellness support.
  • Travel and per diem compensation for VA health care appointments.
